influence: linda for interview russia

September's Interview Russia brings with it a menswear-inspired story defined entirely by the classic charm of Linda Evangelista. Aggressively chopped and tousled hair complements a round of garments from Calvin Klein, Armani, and Thom Browne that are styled to massive proportion by Patti Wilson. Lensed by Daniele and Iango, the minimal photography gains dimensionality with touches of red layered throughout.

influence: novo

Dazed & Confused's September issue brings us a hodgepodge of our favorite editorial elements. In the brief series, Pierre Debusschere brings model Guerrino Santulliana into a kind of dimensional purgatory that recalls Richard Haines as well as A-ha. Errant brushstrokes and lounge prep stylings bring to life the new collaboration between Christophe Lemaire and Bean Pole. Don't try this at home.

tumblr influences

Check out some of my favourite tumblr blogs, ranging from collage to photography to historical influences!

isallthereis - If you love collage art, you've got to follow this tumblr. This is my source for images meshed together in a way you would never imagine making sense until you see them combined in front of you: surprising, weird, cool, and colorful. The image above is not one the blogger created, but shows what the blog is visually all about.

daughterofhungryghosts - A tumblr icon, Ali is anything but ordinary. Her hair has ranged from red to blue to purple to pink to blonde to brown, and her taste in images is superb. You won't be able to click away from this blog that follows the life of this adventurous girl.

hottiesfromhistory - Exactly what the title states -- cool people from the past with great faces. The descriptions of the people themselves are extremely interesting, and add a historical flair that many vintage photo blogs do not incorporate.

jonyeston - A friend of mine, Jon, started this blog a while ago to his photography portfolio. His use of color is incredible, and the images themselves make you picture the world around you in a more beautiful light. His attention to detail charming and intriguing.

street style - Hungry for street fashion? This tumblr is clean, crisp, and reblogs images that are anything but plain. The choice of fashion photos is great, and it gives a lot of inspiration for outfit combinations. This is a site you won't want to skip over!

my enemy and a haute mess

We are very excited about the Bag' o Bones Cuff in Colored Enamel, our newest piece from My Enemy by Chris Habana.  This accessory was prominently worn during the notorious "Haute Mess" by Steven Meisel (video and images above) for the March 2012 issue of Vogue Italia, which caused a major stir in the news media. The video features over the top looks with pieces from both Chris Habana and UNIF. Also newly back in stock is the amazing neon floral Funeral Cuff, seen below in Zink. These move fast so grab yours now!

DUST MAGAZINE

DUST Magazine has strong post-apocalyptic undertones and an undeniable inclination towards an aesthetic that might be called "urban slum punk meets blue collar wasteland." The images have a candid and real quality that obscures the divide usually separating the realms of fashion and of art. DUST seeks to merge art and fashion in a way that pushes fashion "much closer to an artistic point of view" and judging by their latest issue they are undoubtably succeeding. INTERNET FRIENDS: COMMONCHANT TUMBLR

Julie Eckert is an audio and visual artist from Vancouver Island, BC. Her work is based in creating other dimensions in which to store memory and manipulate both image and sound. In her free time she is the curator of commonchant tumblr. She currently is living in Montreal, Quebec.

SARAH: Commonchant is a very interesting tumblr, it takes on a lot of topics (art, fashion, food, culture, craft, and time), what was your original inspiration for the project?

JULIE: My friend Mel (who had started her tumblr UUIUU a few months earlier) was encouraging me to start one as well. The direction of commonchant was formed within the idea of image hoarding. I wanted a place where I could collect images and then reflect upon them, like a sticker album. It became a good space to organize thought and express feeling without being weighed down by possession. It also became an effective way to unclutter my mind and transplant my thoughts into another space/dimension. Over the years commonchant has become a kind friend, my pet and passion. I like the idea of having it all catalogued, tucked away but still not quite tangible. It has grown a world in itself, like a polly pocket, a geode.

S: CC shows a lot of attention to detail and color, what kind of fashion do you graviatate towards in your day to day wardrobe?

J: Aesthetically I really enjoy experimenting with color, texture and pattern. My closet contains a pretty big mass of black and white print fabric, bright colors and pastels. I've grew up in Victoria BC and now live in Montreal QC, both climates require a lot of layering and I have fun playing off of that. I'm visually attracted to things that shouldn't go together but just feel right. Lately I've been wearing a lot sweatshirts/pants mixed into my wardrobe. There is something wonderful to me about wearing grey sweatpants and doc's together (it's self-satisfying to cringe at the distaste of it).

S: There are also a lot of references to childhood/domestic and "kid stuff", are you inspired by the objects you grew up with?

J: My mind runs in and out of a childlike/whimsical headspace, that is of course reflected on my tumblr. My personal experience as a child isn't something I am intentionally attempting to draw from. It is more embracing that head space and a continuance of thought. I have a tragic and delightful weakness for anthropomorphism. Often I experience a longing for certain color combinations, shapes or prints that were prominent in my childhood. I've been experiencing a similar longing for objects/images/sounds that have never been a physical part of my life. I think the internet has a lot to attribute to that, it is sort of a learned/implanted nostalgia.

S: What do you think about tumblr culture, its very social, but no one really knows anyone. Do you have any "tumblr crushes"?

J: I love tumblr culture and at the same time find it slightly problematic. As tumblr is an image based subculture in which people are creating image based archetypes, those archetypes can sometimes come off as shallow and juvenile. I'm sure my tumblr is vulnerable to that as well. Within the culture I find a certain respect for origin is being lost and that the context of an image can become warped. I also think that images being taken out of their original context can be really interesting. I am primarily drawn to tumblr blogs that allow me to read into the personality behind the blog. I think my blog has become its own entity. I have constructed it a life of it's own. <<<virtual reality>> The idea of communicating through images is second nature to me. It is an outlet in my life where I can express myself without the debilitating anxiety that the outside world causes for me. I think that is the same for a lot of people who have tumblrs. I love that it draws so many creative minds inside one space to converse. I have some met some lovely friends on tumblr, Shelbi who curates chromefoam and Ann who curates kwassakwassa (both who I have yet to meet irl). My close friend of years Mel curates UUIUU, now that we live at opposite sides of the country tumblr has become a place for us to share ideas and interact on a day to day basis. As for a tumblr crush, that would have to be my partner Jesse who is the mind behind eternalwinter. I find myself often wishing eternalwinter was my own blog, as is it is an accurate reflection of my other half (visually, my darker half).

S: You do a great job of maintaining flow, what is that stream of thought like? Is there a constant?

J: The flow is directed by whatever has peaked my interest at the moment. If there is a constant, it is sound. I think sound effects how I am feeling about shape and color, it makes it easy to sew images together. The idea of space/time/inter-dimensional travel is always weaving its way through my consciousness. I also have a great interest in botany, so the ideas of growth, change and evolution are always at the forefront of my mind. Somedays I feel I have little energy to direct to expressing myself online, other times it is almost compulsive. I easily become immersed in the act of orchestrating a picture plane, creating flux.

S: Who are some of your favorite designers? favorite blogs? and favorite films?

J: I have a never-ending love for fashion and film, but they escape me. I consume it and then it trickles through my fingers. Although a constant source of inspiration, I don't have set favourites. There is too many... too much. I suppose my taste in film runs anywhere through from science fiction to japanese animation. There is a lot of great content available on ubuweb. I draw most of my artistic vision from music. Sound is such a vast space that I will spare you endless listing and forward you to my last.fm profile. As for my winter soundscapes, I've been spending my days alongside ambient/electronic music, black metal and amiga/atari games soundtracks. For the past few years I've also curated a music blog that shares the commonchant namesake. Though I've lost interest in keeping up acquaintances with it during the past year, it's content still speaks considerably on my personal tastes.

S: Is there any "look" that you just can't stand?

J: For sure. I cannot understand why oh why there are still so many people who participate in cultural appropriation in the way that they express themselves. Indigenous appropriation in fashion is something that is so prominent in western culture and I find it so disturbing. The most recent trend that I find problematic and can't stand is the use of a bindi as a fashion adornment. Aesthetically I can appreciate it's beauty but I can't overlook how offensive it is. Sadly it has made me lose some respect for several other people on tumblr, who I've been a fan of in the past.
**For more insight, this is great a piece on colonialism and popular culture by Ananya Mukherjea, which can be read (here).

S: What does commonchant mean?

J: In a general sense it is a reference to meeting of the minds, a celebration of the hive mind. It doesn't delve much deeper than that, the process of naming thecommonchant was really quite arbitrary. :3

a short introduction,  your resume, 3 blogs you follow, and an image to represent yourself to Sarah@idontlikemondays.us

INFLUENCE: Daisy Lowe in September's Playboy

Gavin Rossdale's little girl is no longer a child. The UK social fixture, model, and style icon is now posing for Playboy. Although the likes of Lara Stone and Lily Cole have appeared in the magazine, Daisy is a shocking choice. She has appeared in W, Interview, jalouse, Elle, has shot with Terry Richardson, walked for Vivienne Westwood. She has always been notable for her womanly body and has often "shown some skin". But Playboy? What's next...Alexa Chung? Oh and PS she wears platform sneakers!

FASHION FRIEND: The legendary Miss Vaginal Davis

Miss Vaginal Davis needs no introduction. She is a performance artist, painter, film actress and fashion icon. She has been a part of several bands, made tons of zines and participated in shows all over the world. She recently did a performance at MoCA. She is a creative powerhouse and a glamour girl. We had a chat about fashion...

S: Miss Davis, you've had so many iconic looks over the years, is there one you feel is your signature?
VD:I don´t really have a signature look. When I first started doing drag as a teenager I wanted to differentiate myself from the olde school of drag and be more androgynous in my appearance. Now that I am older I have reverted to a more classical approach in look and style. Some looks that have gone over really well are my Bricktop look of a rust colored bob haircut and 1920s or Tin Pan Alley clothing. The Edwardian era and the Jazz Age are a fantastic period for my body type. During the run of Bricktops at the Parlour Club in Los Angeles from 2002-2005 I became closely identified with a new movement of heritage dressing. Also my look on the cover of Jose Munoz´s book Disidentifications where I am parodying Ciccolini aka: Ilona Staller the former Italian Parliament member, porn model and wife of art star Jeff Koons.

S: One thing that is amazing about your style is how you are able to wear ANYTHING, you take stripper shoes, a designer caftan, broken earrings, whatever...and you truly put your own spin on it. How do you integrate things so well?
VD:My general style comes from the concept of availabism, making good use of what is readily available. I have also copied my late mother who was very fashion forward wearing underwear as outerwear decades before Gaultier.
I also love mixing inexpensive items with haute couture. Of course I am fortunate to have been the muse of many talented designers like Rick Owens, Marc Jacobs, Jill Sander, Gaultier, Thierry Mugler and Claude Montana so i have a nice collection of specialty pieces to play with.

S: You've lived in LA, spent time in NY, but now you live in Berlin. What would you say about the fashion there as compared to LA/NY?
VD:Berlin fashion is complicated. I love how its the city that every youth culture fashion movement from WWI to the present has never died. You´ll see someone dressed as a flapper and they aren´t trying to be retro. Its just their natural mode of dressing. Some people dress really conservatively like its the answer to everything, then there are others who are rave damaged. Don´t let me get started about the bad crazy colored hair, dumb tats and unflattering lip piercings. My collegue in the CHEAP art kollective Susanne Sachsse is very glamorous. She takes a lot of fashion risks and has an edgy personal style that is quite intoxicating. Berlin is best when it doesnt try to copy the boutique cities and is just itself warts and all.

S: Your blog is so amazing, and you give us so much info about your life. It reminds me of how specific and meticulous warhol kept his diary, its amazing. What do you like in a blog? Do you read blogs?
VD:I approach blogging like I am still a teenage girl writing in her diary. I credit my webmaster Larry Bob Roberts. If it wasn´t for Larry I wouldn´´t be known as one of the first bloggers. I am completely technically challenged so thank god for Larry. I couldnt have joined the 21st century without his devotion and support. I have a quarter of a million subscribers to my blog, but most of that traffic came to me accidentally because I have a sexualized name. I really don´t have a lot of time to read other blogs but the few I am able to peek at from time to time are Lady Bunny´s, Justin Bond, Ernest Hardy and fashion scribe Glenn Belverio.

S: Who are your style icons?
VD: I worship Diane Vreeland and her famous quote "There is elegance in refusal" Its the mantra I chant everyday. I also adore Donyale Luna, Grace Jones, Dovima, Verushka, Bibbe Hansen and Beth Ditto.

S: What is one trend, new or old, that you simply cannot stand?
VD: If you are going to work a Nazi youth haircut, make sure that you are first and foremost a youth. Also dying ones hair jett black or blondine when you have gnarly skin isn´t a very good idea.

moon safari

INTERNET FRIENDS: Haeyeon Choi

Haeyeon Choi is a 20 year old student from San Francisco studying at Parsons the New School for Design majoring in IDC fashion. She started her blog simply because she had too many things saved on her desktop, and then things just took off from there. Her continuous stream of beautiful images shows taste and perspective. She came by the IDLM office to have a chat, take some photos, and drink a bubble tea.

S:One thing that really draws me to your blog is that it feels like a constant collage, every image has a connection with the one before and the one after. Whats the relationship between them?
H: I try to keep the images on my tumblr consistent and balanced throughout. For example I won't post two images that are from the same photo shoot back to back. I think it's more fun when it's all over the place and spontaneous!

S: So, the 90s are having a major revival right now. It seems really powerful for people who were raised in that time. What is your connection to that aesthetic? And what is your favorite 90s look?
H: I'm glad the 90's is coming back. The clothes back then were so horrible that its actually oh so good and now I see all these people rocking them, including myself. My favorite 90's look is Marc Jacobs for Perry Ellis 1992. I want to live in that whole collection.

S: Another important theme in your images is a balance between a really aggressive/androgynous look and an over the top feminine one.
H: Androgynous is on the top of the list for me. My main inspiration is the model Andrej Pejic who is definitely the defintion of that word!

S: OK...so this is a pretty hard question, if you could only wear ONE designer for the rest of your life who would it be?
H: If I had to wear only one designer....that is a very hard question! But I would say...Christopher Kane. I feel like his clothes are a perfect balance of my aesthetic so I won't go crazy. Also he's a genius.

S: Agreed. Who is your style soul mate?
H: There is this Japanese DJ named Mademoiselle Yulia who is currently a style icon for me! She can wear the most crazy/colorful clothes and look so fierce in them. Also, I dyed my hair purple and got a bob cut because of her!!

S:What is the worst popular trend happening today?
H: Seriously what is in trend right now? Ha ha.
