"GANG OF" PROUD RACE SS12

Proud Race describes the inspiration for their line as "a gang of nomadic skaters and their trophy girlfriends." Need we say more? The line is minimal and still referential to larger ideas of uniform, culture, and youth. Watch the film above and check out their line, brand new in the SHOP.

X.S.V. x IDLM: BLACK ZEN SPRING 2012

BLACK ZEN is a video editorial directed and written by interdisciplinary artist Xavier Valentine in collaboration with IDLM. The video works as a series of "tableaux vivants" illustrating the idea of ceremony and ritual in daily dress. BLACK ZEN derives inspiration from such films as the HOLY MOUNTAIN, Alejandro Jodorowsky's infamous film steeped in esoteric-ism and ancient rites. The film features pieces from Bond Hardware, SIR New York, Obesity and Speed, Chris Habana, and Luv AJ.
Xavier Valentine's body of work often explores semiotics within the realm of the occult. He seeks to observe correlations of antiquity bearing on our perception, creation, and curation of modern "artifacts". His most recent solo show, in collaboration with R.K. Projects at the Marty and Perry Granoff Centre for the Creative Arts titled ATLAS, was a large scale installation inspired by Roland Barthes' 1977-1978 lecture on neutrality. Xavier applies this attitude of inclusiveness and uncovering of mystery toward his love for fashion. 

ASHER LEVINE: past and future tense

Last week for their NYFW presentation Asher Levine paid homage to the past and blazed straight into the future. Held at the historic Jefferson Market Library, the collection was innovative but held onto some classic notions of masculine style.

love hangover

volt magazine, a british multimedia fashion collective, has released a brief videotorial featuring alice dellal and directed by joost vandebrug. the story depicts the model in two different perspectives, which are uniquely overlaid for effect. plays on color saturation, texturing, and acting give this feature something new to offer.

the karass

showstudio's newest fashion film, directed by nick knight, is an exercise in elegant curation. a simple concept, striking track, and well-executed beauty combine to effectively highlight the neckwear of kat marks with undercurrents of art deco and showgirl themes. click here to view.

200 portraits

showstudio's video image series from nick knight's project for i-d's 30th anniversary continues this week. every wednesday, a new selection of clips from the 17 day shoot is posted. philip treacy, lily donaldson, and others join the ranks of fashion, music, and art icons currently posted to the site.

fourteen actors acting

the new york times magazine now has a video gallery of fourteen actors that defined cinema in 2010. directed by solve sundsbow, each clip shows one of the actors adopting screen types. the black and white aesthetic gives each mini-feature plenty of visual appeal to match the talent. especially noteworthy is natalie portman's styling, chosen to help embody the 1940s starlet.

centrefold

rie rasmussen stars in a new centrefold editorial with edgy posing that corresponds to her voluminous and interestingly proportioned looks. but even more interesting than the story itself is the immaculately produced and modeled behind the scenes video that make production look just as beautiful as the finished product.

metropolis

we've just discovered this short by pierre debusschere, which premiered last summer. featuring the designs of juan hernandez daels, its organic yet avant garde presence gives it a different look and feel than most videotorials we've been seeing lately. all in all, it definitely still feels current.
