i see things

this saturday, an ongoing exhibit by honza zamojski will have an additional element at play when roman polanski's knife in the water is screened. the exhibition itself deals with "the matter, content, and function of things," with everyday objects being manipulated in a quasi-scientific manner to discover relationships between perception, reality, and meaning. full details here.

die ehe der maria braun

this saturday, the brooklyn academy of music is screening the fassbinder classic, the marriage of maria braun. the film follows the title character from the day of her marriage throughout her lifelong struggle for power and fame. with entertaining surface elements as well as profound deeper themes, it's considered a milestone in german new wave cinema. full details available here.

mix 23

waste land

the product of three years of work, waste land is a documentary film premiering at angelika tomorrow. it follows a brazilian artist from brooklyn to the world's largest garbage dump, located outside of rio. there, the film captures the experience of the catadores, who filter through the waste for recyclables. the film's strong visuals and transformative themes have garnered a number of positive reviews.
