Julie Eckert is an audio and visual artist from Vancouver Island, BC. Her work is based in creating other dimensions in which to store memory and manipulate both image and sound. In her free time she is the curator of commonchant tumblr. She currently is living in Montreal, Quebec.

SARAH: Commonchant is a very interesting tumblr, it takes on a lot of topics (art, fashion, food, culture, craft, and time), what was your original inspiration for the project?

JULIE: My friend Mel (who had started her tumblr UUIUU a few months earlier) was encouraging me to start one as well. The direction of commonchant was formed within the idea of image hoarding. I wanted a place where I could collect images and then reflect upon them, like a sticker album. It became a good space to organize thought and express feeling without being weighed down by possession. It also became an effective way to unclutter my mind and transplant my thoughts into another space/dimension. Over the years commonchant has become a kind friend, my pet and passion. I like the idea of having it all catalogued, tucked away but still not quite tangible. It has grown a world in itself, like a polly pocket, a geode.

S: CC shows a lot of attention to detail and color, what kind of fashion do you graviatate towards in your day to day wardrobe?

J: Aesthetically I really enjoy experimenting with color, texture and pattern. My closet contains a pretty big mass of black and white print fabric, bright colors and pastels. I've grew up in Victoria BC and now live in Montreal QC, both climates require a lot of layering and I have fun playing off of that. I'm visually attracted to things that shouldn't go together but just feel right. Lately I've been wearing a lot sweatshirts/pants mixed into my wardrobe. There is something wonderful to me about wearing grey sweatpants and doc's together (it's self-satisfying to cringe at the distaste of it).

S: There are also a lot of references to childhood/domestic and "kid stuff", are you inspired by the objects you grew up with?

J: My mind runs in and out of a childlike/whimsical headspace, that is of course reflected on my tumblr. My personal experience as a child isn't something I am intentionally attempting to draw from. It is more embracing that head space and a continuance of thought. I have a tragic and delightful weakness for anthropomorphism. Often I experience a longing for certain color combinations, shapes or prints that were prominent in my childhood. I've been experiencing a similar longing for objects/images/sounds that have never been a physical part of my life. I think the internet has a lot to attribute to that, it is sort of a learned/implanted nostalgia.

S: What do you think about tumblr culture, its very social, but no one really knows anyone. Do you have any "tumblr crushes"?

J: I love tumblr culture and at the same time find it slightly problematic. As tumblr is an image based subculture in which people are creating image based archetypes, those archetypes can sometimes come off as shallow and juvenile. I'm sure my tumblr is vulnerable to that as well. Within the culture I find a certain respect for origin is being lost and that the context of an image can become warped. I also think that images being taken out of their original context can be really interesting. I am primarily drawn to tumblr blogs that allow me to read into the personality behind the blog. I think my blog has become its own entity. I have constructed it a life of it's own. <<<virtual reality>> The idea of communicating through images is second nature to me. It is an outlet in my life where I can express myself without the debilitating anxiety that the outside world causes for me. I think that is the same for a lot of people who have tumblrs. I love that it draws so many creative minds inside one space to converse. I have some met some lovely friends on tumblr, Shelbi who curates chromefoam and Ann who curates kwassakwassa (both who I have yet to meet irl). My close friend of years Mel curates UUIUU, now that we live at opposite sides of the country tumblr has become a place for us to share ideas and interact on a day to day basis. As for a tumblr crush, that would have to be my partner Jesse who is the mind behind eternalwinter. I find myself often wishing eternalwinter was my own blog, as is it is an accurate reflection of my other half (visually, my darker half).

S: You do a great job of maintaining flow, what is that stream of thought like? Is there a constant?

J: The flow is directed by whatever has peaked my interest at the moment. If there is a constant, it is sound. I think sound effects how I am feeling about shape and color, it makes it easy to sew images together. The idea of space/time/inter-dimensional travel is always weaving its way through my consciousness. I also have a great interest in botany, so the ideas of growth, change and evolution are always at the forefront of my mind. Somedays I feel I have little energy to direct to expressing myself online, other times it is almost compulsive. I easily become immersed in the act of orchestrating a picture plane, creating flux.

S: Who are some of your favorite designers? favorite blogs? and favorite films?

J: I have a never-ending love for fashion and film, but they escape me. I consume it and then it trickles through my fingers. Although a constant source of inspiration, I don't have set favourites. There is too many... too much. I suppose my taste in film runs anywhere through from science fiction to japanese animation. There is a lot of great content available on ubuweb. I draw most of my artistic vision from music. Sound is such a vast space that I will spare you endless listing and forward you to my last.fm profile. As for my winter soundscapes, I've been spending my days alongside ambient/electronic music, black metal and amiga/atari games soundtracks. For the past few years I've also curated a music blog that shares the commonchant namesake. Though I've lost interest in keeping up acquaintances with it during the past year, it's content still speaks considerably on my personal tastes.

S: Is there any "look" that you just can't stand?

J: For sure. I cannot understand why oh why there are still so many people who participate in cultural appropriation in the way that they express themselves. Indigenous appropriation in fashion is something that is so prominent in western culture and I find it so disturbing. The most recent trend that I find problematic and can't stand is the use of a bindi as a fashion adornment. Aesthetically I can appreciate it's beauty but I can't overlook how offensive it is. Sadly it has made me lose some respect for several other people on tumblr, who I've been a fan of in the past. **For more insight, this is great a piece on colonialism and popular culture by Ananya Mukherjea, which can be read (here).

S: What does commonchant mean?

J: In a general sense it is a reference to meeting of the minds, a celebration of the hive mind. It doesn't delve much deeper than that, the process of naming thecommonchant was really quite arbitrary. :3

After they met and bonded over their love for deviance and high fashion they came together and founded Bond Hardware. SARAH: Hey Guys! Your stuff is really amazing and so versatile! Its unisex and can really suit a wide range of people. Another thing we love about your pieces is that they're totally bad ass but really polished, how do you straddle that line so effortlessly?

We try to balance the edgy-ness of our pieces with minimalism. This helps them maintain a refined quality that helps appeal to a broader market.

What kind of clothing do you see your hardware being worn with? What are your favorite designers? looks? or inspirations?

VINCENT: Ideally, our collection is to be worn with a collared shirt, but the great thing about it is that you are able to wear it however you prefer. Currently, my favorite fashion designers are Acne and Raun LaRose. Also, Gaspard Yurkievich has been an huge inspiration of mine.
DANA: Some of the pieces look great as necklaces too. When I don’t feel like being buttoned up I’ll grab a Hitch ring, or the chain lock, the double clip and even the male window lock. My favorite designers currently are Haider Ackerman – Tilda Swinton looked amazing in his look at the Golden Globes, and always Iris Apfel is a flawless style icon of mine.

Is there anything that you can't stand as far as trends? Any pet peeves?

VINCENT: Well this is easy! Northface. Leggings. Uggs. Especially, Northface + Leggings + Uggs = Not cute.
DANA: I’ll just add that leggings aren’t a substitute for pants. No matter how amazing your legs are or if you just came from yoga.

Do you guys have any major fashion crushes? Who would be the dream person to wear BH?

VINCENT: Definitely, Jacob Coupe.
DANA: Lady Fag, or Obama, Mrs. or Mr..

Your tumblr is so great. Do you take a lot of fashion inspiration from the internet? Do you find it useful that way?

Yes, social networking is a huge part of our work. Tumblr is a great platform for collecting and curating our daily inspirations. It allows us to be inspired by people and places that we normally wouldn’t be able to be affected by and constantly share that with our creative network.

Did you guys meet in fashion school? Were you instant style soul-mates? How did you go about beginning to design together?

We met through mutual friends. We had an intimate moment in a taxi cab… and then started playing dress up together. Dana goes to Pratt for fashion Design and Vince goes to The Art Institute for graphic Design.

Where did the name Bond Hardware come from?

Our name is inspired by bondage wear, so we started playing with the words bond and bound. The name in that context also alludes to a bond between two people.

I'm horribly depressed. I recently found out my boyfriend is cheating on me, the shock still hasn't worn off and I’ve yet to confront him. I'm beginning to wonder whether I haven't confronted him because I don't want to give up the sex. His mum also makes an insane chocolate fudge cake, so that could also be another reason. Do I confront him, ignore it, let it spill out in a drunken psycho yelling fit, or simply break it off?

First of all, you’re not an idiot. Most people in this world have either been cheated on or been the cheater, and that will probably never change because the human race is inherently slutty. Because most of us have the ability to separate sex and love, it means that even if you truly love someone it’s not out of the question that you will make the conscious decision to fuck someone else behind their back at one point or another. That doesn’t necessarily make you a bad person, it just makes you human (i.e. epically flawed).

The thing is, your boyfriend obviously hurt you, which is a problem. If you never agreed to be in an open relationship then sleeping with someone else is grounds for a break up. There are things to think about: did he sleep with someone just one time? Has he slept with lots of other people? Has he been sleeping with a specific person repeatedly? Option three is probably the most serious, because that’s when you enter “emotional cheating” territory, which is the worst kind.What’s important to remember is that monogamy is hard. If two people have a great relationship then I don’t think it should be a deal breaker if someone gets drunk and fucks somebody one night. If your boyfriend needed to fuck another girl it probably has way more to do with his own ego or his sex-crazed man brain than it does with how he feels about you.

The right thing to do is just to talk to him about it. But don’t go in screaming and don’t be drunk when you do it. You have every right to be mad, but screaming won’t solve anything and you need to have a rational conversation. This is probably not the most responsible thing to tell you, but for the sake of honesty I’ll share. A few years ago I found out my boyfriend was cheating on me. I wanted to kill him, but instead I just went out and fucked another guy. Knowing I had fooled around too gave me a sense of mental power, and I felt more confident and less manic when I finally confronted him and recited the pre-planned line "I know you fucked that anorexic skank from LA you illiterate prick." So uh... yeah, I’m not suggesting you should follow my lead on that one. But the point (I think) I’m trying to make is: don’t play the victim. Do what you want, because there are no rules. If you want to forgive him, then forgive him. It’s not embarrassing. If you want to get threesomed by two farmers to get back at him, then I think that’s fair enough. However if you can’t get over his infidelity and you think it will haunt your relationship forever, then you should break it off. There are lots of guys out there who are good in bed who will send you “absolutely insane” with their boners. It’s a mathematical certainty.

Please, for the love of god, no acrobatics. I’ll make it simple: as a hetero guy, if you want to be good in bed you have to be attentive to the girl and receptive to what turns her on. You know all the screaming orgasms girls have in porn? Yeah, those are fake. Pounding us repeatedly from behind for ten minutes isn’t going to make us cum. Also, we don’t like it when you try to shove it in while we’re still dry. “In 1845, slightly over 23% of the inhabitants of the Northeastern United States suffered from what was then commonly referred to as “Combustivism” which, according to the DSM-IV-R, is currently known as Schizoaffective Disorder. Symptoms included hallucinations, delusions and manic episodes. Men and women alike would forget who they were, what they did for a living, who their spouses and children were and, would more often than not, set out on violent rampages that led to arson, beatings, and property damage.

During the extraordinarily violent month of April 1846, 25 people were injured during a melee in Boston. In response, President James K. Polk gave a speech to Congress in which he voiced his concern for the turmoil sweeping the nation by stating “if this madness doesn’t stop, I will have to use the big stick of the law and beat back.” Murders and violent crimes were so rampant that martial law was instituted in the states of Massachusetts, New York, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia. There were unsubstantiated rumors that Combustivism was caused by dust in homes, by letters and the saliva used to seal envelopes (the theory held that when the saliva dried and the letter was opened it would emit a caustic human dust that was believed to also be the root cause of insomnia and fevered states of aggression). Other causes were said to be brought on by the ink used to print newspapers, by food grown in eastern soil and most peculiarly, ornithologists of the period claimed that cardinals had an extreme alkalinity in their droppings, which was claimed to “dry” the brains of humans who happened to inhale the dried remnants of cardinal feces" - Todd Colby, Brooklyn, New York 2011

I live in little ol’ New Zealand and go to an all girls Catholic school. I'm 16, half English/half Caribbean, and what some people call 'exotic'. Basically it means I don't look like anyone else around here. It makes me cringe writing it, but a lot of older men seem to be drawn to me. So wait, the problem is that lots of guys want to fuck you? Bitch, that’s not a problem! One day you will be old with sagging skin and no homeless people will be jerking off to you, and you will resent having been so unappreciative of these generous sexual offerings. Also, I’m just going to put this out there: older guys are better in bed. As someone who has slept with a wide variety of boys/men between the ages of 14 and 53, I can say that with confidence. (The 14 year old was when I was 16, chill.) Boys, as well as girls, get better at sex with age. HERE she talks about how being a babe is just as valuable a form of capital as anything else, and that those who subscribe to the dated feminist idea that women shouldn’t try to be “hot”, and that beauty is superficial and has no value, are actually just fucking themselves over. Basically, use what you’ve got.

Despite general society seemingly to have developed an attraction for nerdy, socially awkward, and somewhat unattractive guys now, I find being a nerdy, socially awkward, and somewhat unattractive guy to be quite distressing. For one, I have no friends, and thus no social life, and walking around by myself at lunch really sucks. All because I'm shy as fuck! Also I feel really self-conscious around girls. How can I get a life and not be quite so nerdy, socially awkward and somewhat unattractive?

This depends on what type of nerd you are. Are you a smart, science nerd? If so, you can be as socially awkward as you want, because that goes with the overall aesthetic. My advice to you is to suck it up, study hard, and I promise that after high school, AKA when the real world begins and people start valuing intelligence over how far you can kick a ball or whatever, you will have more friends and girls wanting to sleep with you than you could ever imagine. However if this is not the case and you are in fact the bad kind of nerd, i.e. just socially awkward with no redeeming qualities to tip the scale, then for Christ’s sake, get good at something! People want to fuck people who are good at stuff: fact. The people in this world with sexual power rarely have it solely because of their looks; it’s because they are exceptional. Defs no one would want to sleep with Wes Anderson or Seth Rogen if their only contributions to the world were working at Starbucks. This seems to be an issue for a lot of people. My answer to this is simple: THERE ARE NO RULES. People put too much emphasis on what should and should not be done regarding sex, when really the only answer is to just do what feels right. Do you want to have sex with a random girl? If so, then you should. Would you prefer to wait and sleep with someone you love, but feel pressured by social norms to lose your virginity before going to college? If that’s the case, go with your gut and wait. I understand that this answer is neither funny nor witty, but sometimes we need to remind ourselves that most seemingly difficult questions have the simplest of answers.

Molly Soda is an internet artist and an effective provocateur. Without writing anything, Molly's stream of tumblr images conjures up ideas of feminism, perversion, culture, and identity. She causes discussion. Her style and persona are hidden behind a veil of mystery, and that got us asking questions.

Sarah: So, Molly...photos of you seem to solicit a lot of commentary. People are super fascinated by your appearance (e.g. your comment chain video above). What do you think it is about your hair color, under arms, clothes, or whatever that has people so worked up? What is your favorite color for your hair to be?

Molly: I have no idea what gets people so worked up. People spend a lot of time worrying about others instead of improving their attitudes. I've enjoyed all of my hair colors. I think yellow and lime green were the most fun because they are a bit more unusual. I'm hoping to do a grey color maybe with some pastel pink or seafoam green soon.

S: Back to the topic of your videos. Several of the films on your vimeo function a lot like art. There is an aspect of duration and they are strangely disturbing. Can you speak a bit about your intentions with those?

M: I would say that any video I put on the internet functions as art. I don't have any particular intention that I am 100 percent aware of or that I would like to reveal at least. I think now that I've graduated art school I'd like to forget about having some grand intent with my work completely and just focus on making/putting out work.

S: Some guy decided to register the domain name Mollysoda.com. What the fuck is up with that? Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery? Who is that guy?

M: I was not aware of this until I read this question. I vaguely know him. I'm sure mollysoda.com gets a lot more hits than his blog would normally.

S: A lot of people in their 20's have come to feel a renewed love for a 90's raver aesthetic. The kind of technicolor/choker wearing/platform sneaker/glittering low-fi imagery that was big when we were kids. What is your contemporary connection to that world?

M: I think people generally like feeling nostalgic. The funny thing is, as much as I can feel nostalgic over 90s cartoon shows I had no real connection to raver/club kid/art culture that was going on in the 90s seeing as i was too young to be a part of that crowd. I think that interest comes from a want to be a part of an era you missed out on only by a few years.

S: Your style is constantly evolving, which I love. Do you get bored easily? What is your fashion constant?

M: Honestly, I don't have a fashion constant. My style changes from month to month. I'm the kind of person that gets really obsessed with wearing a certain item of clothing or a certain style for short periods of time and then I'll move on to whatever seems fun and new at the moment.

S: Who are your artistic/cinematic inspirations?

M: Movies...Clueless, She's all that, 10 things i hate about you, Wayne's world, Josie and the pussycats, Nowhere, The Craft… I could go on forever. For artists - Francesca Woodman, Ryan Trecartin, Ana Mendieta, and Nina hagen. With tv shows - Popular, Tim and Eric.

S: Is there any celebrity that you wish you could personally assassinate? Or any style?

M: No, I do not wish death upon anyone or anything, even ugg boots :)

Do you like getting creepy, overly horny texts from dudes at 3am? No, so don’t be that person. It makes you seem desperate. If you want to ask a guy out, the way to do it is to send a controlled, to-the-point daytime text. Saying something like “Would you like to hang out with me on Friday night?” at 4pm on a Wednesday makes you seem super cool and confident, like you just casually thought of him while food shopping and decided to send him that text without even really thinking about it. IDLM: So we see you’re friendly with Drake. Want to tell us about that, at the risk of making us a little more jealous?

C&&B: Well we were at the SNL private after dinner with our friend Kenan Thompson, who is on the SNL show. It was the after dinner of the show that Drake performed. After Drake walked in, an hour later he came to our table to speak to Kenan and while they introduced everyone's name, and said, “this is Coco & Breezy,” Drake said he was familiar with our brand, and knew who we were. We then just vibed it out. It was a surprise to us, because anyone that knows us, knows that in our 1st year of starting our brand, up to now, we have listened to him on repeat and his music has been a huge inspiration to us. So now the rest is history… we look forward to collaborating with him in the near future.

IDLM: Your 2011 collection, Wearable Art features some edgy neon bracelets that remind us of glow sticks and raves. When creating this line were you inspired by party culture?

C&&B: No, we weren’t necessarily inspired by a party culture. Every one of our collections, we bring you to a different city in “Planet C&&B.” Wear-able Art was a city in our planet. If you close your eyes, and imagine… You are in a space ship, and you look out the window, you see bright light beaming. Once you have stepped out of the space ship, you see a sky that is black light, with neon art pieces floating in the gravity. Coco reaches out for a circular item and puts it on her wrist, people on earth would call it a “bracelet” but in our planet we call it “Wear-able Art.” We love art, and with that collection, it was inspired by creating art that you were able to wear, and taking it to the next level. There are no limits when we create, and we are visionaries. Our designs are so unique, that is why we create a story line / Planet, so people can be inside of our world.

IDLM: What about pop-culture? Your eyewear, which seems to be all the rage among celebrities and civilians alike, definitely has that pop feel to them.

C&&B: What about pop-culture??... lol . We don’t focus too much on pop-culture when we are in our creative sessions. We are actually out of the loop of “pop culture..” We are big on using our imagination, and we don’t like to flood our minds with too much.

IDLM: Have to say, you guys are some pretty awesome twins. What is it like being identical? Do you get mistaken for each other often or have you ever pretended to be the other, i.e Sister, Sister or The Parent Trap?

C&&B: Aww thanks, IDLM is pretty awesome also! OMG, hahaha its awesome being a twin, we love it! People are always mixing us up, but it doesn’t bother us. The amazing part about being twins and business partners is that we work together very well. When one of us is up working late nights, the other takes a nap, and then we rotate. We are together too much, to ever switch on people ..lol.

IDLM: We see you have a line for kids now. It’s no doubt that the lucky ones who get a hold of those pieces will be the coolest kids on the block. What inspired that?

C&&B: We want to get the kids and parents started early, and we believe that there shouldn’t be a certain age that kids have to be to express their style. We think no matter if your 4 or 44, you should be able to express your art and style by the way you dress and your accessories. So, when creating our kids line, we were inspired by these 8 year old twins name Ka’mani and Madison. They reminded me of us when we were younger, and we used them for the face of our kids line and they are now our protégés. We were blessed to have parents that allowed us to be creative at a young age, and I think people get so stuck on how “Society” thinks a kid should dress. We want to change that!

IDLM: We gotta ask, what are your fashion-must-haves? What can’t you go without?

C&&B: We LOVEEEE LOVEEE color lipstick…. And cannot go with out it, also our eye wear!!! We think simplicity is the key. We wear a lot of all black with layers and a pop of color in our lips.

IDLM: And then of course, what trends do you see now that you can’t stand? What makes you gag? 

C&&B: The arts & craft look. I see a lot of people that just over embellish their jackets, pants, shoes, etc. People are forgetting the fashion and structure of creativity. There is a huge difference between being creative and then doing to much. It has to have a balance.

At the risk of sounding moralistic, I think you should be honest. I’m not saying you have to scream “I’m a hooker!” five seconds after meeting someone, but I don’t think you should lie, either. Generally speaking, it’s a bad idea to form a relationship based on lies, because lies always lead to more lies, and in the end you will either come across as totally evil, or you will be called out and look really dumb. A combination of creativity and quality, Corpse Corps boards are truly functional art. These coffin shaped decks, hand made from maple, are a means of collaboration and artistic experimentation. We asked the Corpse Corps guys a bit more about their boards, and their dark side.

Sarah: How did you guys go about starting this thing? All your production is by hand?

Drew: Jordan and I initially decided that we wanted to create our own

boards by getting ten uncut skateboard plies and shaping them in my

Greenwich Village basement apartment. We accidentally chopped up my

desk with a borrowed jigsaw in the process. Since then we have figured

it out a bit better.

Jordan: We personally hand-cut all our 10” wide decks in the Brooklyn

Navy Yards, spray paint them on the street, screen print them

ourselves, then apply a polyurethane coat to preserve the graphic and

reference old-school slick decks. We have a slightly narrower deck

that we get manufactured, too.

Sarah: The Corpse Corps images and blog are really oriented toward the

occult (pentagrams/skulls/spirituality), whats the connection between

the dark arts and skating?

Jordan & Drew : We grew up as pranksters, listening to Misfits and Iron Maiden,

painting walls, drawing, skateboarding, making ramps, having an

imagination, and rocking on the darker side of things. I don’t know

if there’s a direct correlation between the two it’s just what we’re

into.

Sarah: Your blog is pretty damn entertaining and says a lot about you guys.

Don't you think?

Jordan & Drew: Thanks. We try to pack it with original content on and off the board.

Sarah: So skating is unisex, but its generally a "man's world". Why is that?

Jordan & Drew: Its fine. Girls can definitely shred - its their choice, just as it

is anybody's.

Sarah: Your boards have a unique coffin shape. What kind of skating does

that make for?

Jordan & Drew: The most fun kind.

Sarah: What are your fashion-boners for girls?

Jordan & Drew: Sheer baggy top, good ass pants, and a good attitude.

Sarah: If you weren't a skater/designer/photographer what would you be?

Jordan: An explorer.

Drew: President. Or a fluffer.

Designer Chris Habana brings gothic iconography to the forefront of jewelry trends. His edgy collection features signature cross, spike, and triangle charms that are eye-catching and head-turning. With a childhood reveling in fantasy and sci-fi and a young adult life dabbling in 90’s gay counter-culture, the designer was able to let the two worlds clash to create his bold line. Features in publications from V Magazine, Vogue Italia and Nylon to The New York Times have gained Habana recognition as a daring designer with more great things to come.

CHRIS: Hey Chris! A lot of your jewelry references different symbols (crosses, eyes, thorns, bones etc.) What is the power behind that symbolism? What do these symbols mean to you?

CHRIS: I grew up in a catholic house so crosses have been ingrained in my psyche since childhood. Crosses have so many different meanings to different people. Generally though the connotation is something somber and serious. I like to look at them as a design form and challenge their normal variations by twisting them around, linking them end-on-end or dangling them upside down. The same is true for other symbols such as bones, eyes and thorns. They are all dark in nature but beautiful in form. I like to take them out of context and make it something you wouldn’t think of.

SARAH: All your jewelry is unisex, it looks awesome on both women and men because it achieves a balance of toughness and sexiness, how do you manage to navigate that territory? Managing to include both genders?

CHRIS: People often ask “who do you like to see wearing the line” and the answer is usually some riff on, “Boys, girls and everyone in between.” I’ve always been really into androgyny. I don’t bother to specify pieces for different sexes. I design the collection and encourage everyone to wear it.

SARAH: A lot of your pieces evoke a certain sexuality (i.e. the lovelace ring, thorns), can you speak about the sexual persona of your jewelry? Their boldness?

CHRIS: I love to push the envelope when it comes to sexual taboos in the same way I like to fuck with religious imagery. I always want to create something unexpected and subversive no matter what the subject. Sex in particular though is something we all do and as much as it’s out there on tv there’s still so much that happens behind closed doors that people are afraid of. I dedicated FW11 to merging fetish with fashion for the creation of the “WierdNKinky” collection. I wanted to just put everything in your face and I was surprised by the unexpected response. People seemed ready for it. It was really cool.

SARAH: Do you have any major cinematic or artistic influences that seem to reoccur with your designs?

CHRIS: I draw most of my inspiration from street style but themes from Doom Generation and Paris is Burning always have a presence in the collections.

SARAH: Who is your greatest inspiration?

CHRIS: JESUS, Duh.

SARAH: Your line is so contemporary, so involved with our current culture, what are your guiltiest culture indulgences?

CHRIS: Well I already said Jesus, but I also like Tyra and Weed.

SARAH: What are your style no-nos? What celebrity would you love to make over?

CHRIS: I think anything goes. I’m not into making people over. I am all about people expressing themselves however they are comfortable.

SARAH: Describe your personal style in 5 words, please.
XAVIER: Braid, perforate, length, reflect, chiffon.

SARAH: Your work is both performative and sculptural, and you have a show up now. If you could be the curator of an exhibition with your dream artists (your friends and people you have never met), who would you include? What kind of work interests you most right now?
XAVIER: I'm not much of a curator, I've attempted (it), and had a one-day apartment show with a friend of mine in September that was a lot of fun, but that really proved for me it is maybe too stressful to be responsible for other people's work and how it is going to be represented. However, there are a good handful of people that I would love to collaborate with. I'll just list them in no particular order. 1. Will Reeves, who is an amazing sculptor and did some of the most beautiful metalwork I have ever seen. 2. Matt Underwood, who's installation and video work is lighthearted on the surface, but ends up really seeming like a Dennis Cooper book. 3. Gottfried Helnwein, though there is no way I can produce work as amazing as his just yet. 4. Stellarc because the marriage of performance and technology and the body is 100 percent fascinating and I would love to help develop programs and technologies that act as parasites with him. The sort of work that interests me right now is firmly squared in interdisciplinary site-specific installation. I aim to create environments, spaces, and ambiences that do not or can not exist otherwise, so I like to see things like this as well.

SARAH: Tell us about your current installation.
XAVIER: Currently, I have a show up called ATLAS at the Granoff Centre at Brown University. The gallery that represents me, RK PROJECTS, was approached a little over a year ago to propose a project that would utilize the main gallery space in the building (which is super beautiful). At the time, I had been reading Roland Barthe's lecture on neutrality, which was really having a lot of impact on me, so it ended up being the start point for a year's worth of discussions and experiments in various media to explore those concepts of the neuter and precipice and what that might look like. The collaboration and production that resulted was a large wall mural of a gradient from black to white (vertically oriented), four plaster pillars dip-dyed by hand to be a gradient horizontally, a digital print on silk chiffon, and a 42 minute long collection of videos. It was probably the hardest and most gargantuan project I've ever been a part of, and so, the most rewarding, also.

SARAH: So I know you have a fondness for vintage clothes, whats your strategy when navigating the decades?
XAVIER: I'm not so sure I have a strategy, I am lucky enough to be slender and fairly tall, so I can wear most things so long as they are long enough. I have a particular fondess for women's clothes from the 40's, the cut of these garments are very striking. Especially underpinnings. What I usually end up wearing, in terms of decades: 70s platform boots (except I just got a pair of Jeffrey Campbell shermans with the mirror covered heel that I am in love with, and a pair of Miistas that I similarly fawn over), a pair of baggy black silk trousers that are cropped and tapered, a cropped black chiffon shirt (I have a pretty large collection), and a beautiful Calvin Klein collection lambskin jacket that feels like butter. When it gets cold out, I have a very favourite black cable knit 1980s United Colors of Benetton sweater that I live in. I also have a beautiful mustard floor length wool overcoat with very exaggerated shoulders from Amsterdam that is pretty stunning. So 70s and 80s, I live in that.

SARAH: You are musician/ artist; how do music and fashion connect for you? or music and art?
XAVIER: Music and fashion have always had a very close relationship, as the two dictate each other. It's been a long time now since fashion followed function instead of aesthetics. For me, when I perform live, the costume is just as important as the music, it's a wasted opportunity otherwise, and the audience can feel it. Music and art are basically inseperable as well, for the same reasons.

SARAH: You often use a symbol to represent yourself. What's its origin?
XAVIER: When I first started truly working with installations, I primarily used lasers refracted and aimed to create shapes and spaces within spaces and shapes. These pieces were about genderless creation of new locales, and my music reflected this similar idea. The symbol came from a diagram I had drawn of a beam of light hitting a mirror installed on a ceiling. It created an arc of light under which smoke lazily drifted up. This seemed fitting for all of my artist endeavors and thus it was born.

SARAH: When I first met you, I pretty much died at your beautiful ombre hair! How is that going?
XAVIER: Thanks! My hair is no longer ombre, though soon after I met you, I died it a nice grey-pink that has since washed out. Now it is just blonde and long and wavy (and seriously damaged).

SARAH: Lastly, what is your ultimate fashion no-no?
XAVIER: I have a few: no tall boots on short people, velcro sandals with crew socks, cap-sleeve solid jerseys, and i do not like stilletos on women, only on men. Oh, but everyone should wear heels, all the time.

Al Baio is a painter, blogger, and backpack historian. She works in the art world, makes her own work, and maintains a blog documenting the packs of New Yorkers. Even while we walked down the streets of chinatown, talking about backpacks and Al's past love affair with blue hair, she was compelled to chase down a few people sporting interesting sacks. Al dresses from a place of deep conviction and makes pastels look thoroughly conceptual.

Sarah: Hi Al! So I know you have very strong style opinions (so don't sugar coat anything for me), name three things that you would never be caught dead in.
Al: Velvet anything, velvet everything, a fedora.

Sarah: Color is very important to you, and your approach to it is both methodical and passionate. What draws you into a new phase of color? Does a color in your wardrobe bleed into your paintings? What is the difference emotionally between wearing all purple and all pink? What about all black?
Al: Usually a new backpack will usher in a new phase of color. For me, color is a language with no concrete definitions. The same color means something different from person to person. I'm more interested in exploring the associations that come out of two-color pairings, but I can tell you that when I see all purple I get hungry because I immediately think about purple Flintstone's push-up pops.

Sarah: Who/What are your three greatest style role models? Including paintings, locations, artists, films, etc.
Al: Mickey Mouse forever, Frakenberry for now, Noble Heart Horse (with a lil' Treat Heart Pig on the side) for later.

Sarah: When is fashion art? When is art fashion?
Al: I could really go for an oversized shirt with Balthus' Thérèse rêvant on it right about now.

Sarah: Do you ever regret past fashion choices, or is it all a process?
Al: I wore overalls everyday from 3rd grade to 7th grade. These days, I own multiple pairs of lederhosen. You do the math!

Sarah: If you had to design a uniform to live and die in, what would it look and feel like?
Al: I'm wearing a purple Calvin Klein boilersuit with a pink backpack right now. I'm ready to die.

Sarah: Why is a backpack superior to a purse? What does this say about culture?
Al: HANDS FREE=STRESS FREE. I have shingles, I need all the help I can get (pain is in the purse). It says nothing about culture.

TJ Cowgill is the "man in black" behind the line Actual Pain. He personally designs each piece referencing the occult, fine art, and the heaviest of metal. TJ writes for Seattle's the Stranger, has his own band Book of Black Earth, and maintains a pretty solid blog of his own. TJ makes the kind of clothes guys want to wear, and their girlfriends want to steal. Also, he likes girls in platform shoes - really, he said so! Check out his amazing stuff in the store and our comical exchange below:

Sarah: So TJ, describe your personal style in 5 words.

TJ: Not so young Roy Orbison.

Sarah: What is your favorite thing you've ever designed?

TJ: I always have new favorites, but I think our Pyramid Logo is one of the best things I've ever designed. It's really half luck, I beat a lot of people to the punch on that one. And now we see where triangles and pyramids have gone... But I still believe in the importance of the hidden meaning of the trinity as an esoteric concept. People really want to understand that these days.

Sarah: If you could have Anton Lavey, Aleister Crowley, Elvira, Genesis Breyer p-orridge, Kelly Bundy, and Lil B at dinner party; what would you cook? who would you sit between?and who stays after dinner was over (wink wink)?

TJ: Geez, ha ha! I don't know. Probably pizza. Everybody likes pizza right? And I wouldn't cook it I would order it for delivery. I'd sit between B and Kelly because I would want to watch everyone else very closely. I know that Crowley would want to stay over because Kelly Bundy and Elvira would be there, and since he'd have a big bag of dope I'd probably let him. Then Anton would want to stay because Crowley was staying, and that would make Gen P want to stay and ask Anton questions about the Process or something, and Lil B would probably be on my computer recording a video of himself... So I guess everyone would stay over. I would try and get 1980s Zeena's telephone number from her dad.

Sarah: If you were trapped in a room for the rest of your life watching one director's films on loop, who would it be?

TJ: Easy. Werner Herzog.

Sarah: Are there any musicians or artists who have influenced you so greatly over the years, that now you can see/feel a connection to them in your designs?

TJ: I rip off Raymond Pettibon a lot when I draw. Also if it weren't for the Blues, Rock n' Roll, and consequently Heavy Metal I would never have drawn anything beyond comic book characters.

Sarah: Do you have any style "pet peeves"?

TJ: Not really. I really don't care what other people wear. I do like this trend of women in platform heels, like Jeffery Campbells. It makes girls like 10 times hotter.

Sarah: Lastly, and super important of course, any advice for girls who want to wear fitted caps and not look so..."bro"?

TJ: There's only a few girls that can pull this one off. Having really long hair helps. Also dress the rest of your body really girly and you should be fine. I hope that helps.

Jelena Behrend is a jeweler, working artist, and crucial lower east side destination. Her studio, which she opened in 1998 on Chrystie Street, is open by appointment and frequented by gallerists, notable celebrities, and individuals seeking hand made custom jewelry with a soul. Jelena uses inventive materials like green gold. Her work is a unique combination of aggressive and subtle, both classic and current. Jelena's pieces have been featured in Interview magazine, worn in films, on the red carpet, and she has even designed a perfume bottle for a conceptual art/fragrance project in collaboration with Lisa Kirk. Jelena is a woman who wears many hats. We were glad to ask her a few questions about her style opinions.

Sarah: When you are creating your pieces, do you have a specific type of person in mind? What characteristics seem to be consistent in your clients or muses?

Jelena: As with any artist, I make things that I want to see in the world, objects that I want to exist. I also make custom pieces, and then that person is included to join me.

S: Are there any cinematic icons or films that have effected your personal style, and thus effected your designs?

J: Akasha: Queen of the Damned. I made a series of face masks inspired by her. Rock stars, vampires, powerful women traversing time and history--all these things take part in what i do.

S: If you had to design a uniform for yourself, to wear everyday for the rest of your life, what would it be?

J: Cashmere body suit with platinum chain mail over it.

S: Is there such a thing as too much jewelry?

J: Even one piece can be too much if it's not the right piece.

S: Is there a dream item that you've always wanted, either to design or possess?

J: The Ring of Nibelung. And a metal opanak, the Serbian folk shoe that I made.

S: Who is your style soul mate?

J: The woman in the mirror, she tells me what to do.

A year of polarity is upon us, and its time we take a look at both sides of the feud! The spring collections for 2012 are being shown in New York, and a clear culture clash has arisen. Many designers who in the past have taken a more aggressive approach to their pieces are having a moment of girly sweetness and ladylike pastels. On the other hand we are seeing a lot of leather, athletic structures and utilitarian palettes. How can you find a balance? Alexander Wang's T line, which has established itself as a source of effortless cool, is now taking a turn into the light. The spring collection was white and pastel heavy, with flowing romantic shapes and an unprecedented innocence. Rodarte has also taken the floral road, gone are the days of deconstructed knits and eyeballs. The dresses were voluptuous and optimistic. The clash began even pre-fall with fetishy black leather touches and cheeky vintage prints. Are you polka dots or black lace up boots? Are you floral sequins or monochromatic? Are you feeling masculine in blazers or girly in techno pastels? Maybe you're everything!

Fall is a great time to be re-inspired by fashion, and one of the best sources of that motivation can be a film with really amazing style! So, for your viewing pleasure we're putting together a little "Back2School" viewing to do list! If you're having trouble leaving summer behind, and you are weeping at the thought of getting off the beach...might we suggest the classic 1959 Gidget?Starring Sandra Dee, this teen beach movie will satisfy all your resort-wear nostalgia and is chock-full of serious hunks. Take note of the serious sexual tensions and surf boards, ugh! If you're in darker mood for fall, dont miss Videodrome 1983(pictured above). This trippy-80s-tech-thriller starring Debbie Harry is way campy, and eerily stylish. Any film by Ken Russell is a visual masterpiece, but for fall why not take inspiration from Whore 1991(also above)? The story of a seedy and difficult (yet well adorned) life of a 90's working girl. Feeling style crazy, manipulative, and totally deranged? The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant 1972 (above), is a parade of incredible costumes and emotional turmoil. The whole film, by Fassbinder, takes place in one very elaborate boudoir, instant Netflix people! Or maybe you just want to be a teenager again, a really hot one desired by everyone around you? The Babysitter 1995 starring Alicia Silverstone is a suspenseful tale of a young girl and all her many admirers. And lastly, for a dose of comedy with a sprinkle of fur and diamonds, Alice 1990 directed by Woody Allen is the story of a spoiled and repressed New York housewife and a trip to Chinatown. In the film Mia Farrow wears amazing coats and has an adorable bob cut.

And we are seeing diamond smiley face pendants (above) from Ileana Makri. This is an optimistic trend, quite chipper, even uplifting, but is it sage to invest in a diamond safety pin? FASHION FRIENDS: Jared Zachary of Freedom From Doubt

Freedom From Doubt hits the fashion world with a fresh take on the dapper gentleman. Designer Jared Zachary developed his eye for design studying architecture, but his interest in creating spaces soon translated into fashion. He began his neckwear line Freedom From Doubt in 2009 featuring handmade bow and neckties. He has keen sense of both style and quality. We asked Jared about some of his style opinions and influences:

Sarah: Your designs are very dapper and polished. It seems more and more men are returning to a cleaner look. What do you think it is about a boy in a bowtie, or a suit that's so compelling?
Jared: Boys grow up playing in the dirt, but at some point they are expected to present themselves as an adult. I try to create pieces that will allow the look of the well polished, sensible man without giving up the playfulness of the boy he once was.

S:Your work is handmade. That's very important. They also reference a time when things were more well made and tailoring was considered carefully. Could you speak about quality in clothing, how does that effect you personally when you shop?
J: I think of every piece that I acquire as having some sort of personality. Its life begins when it is conceived; it gains its charm, in my mind, from its material, its construction, and where it was produced. All of these inform me of its quality, which affects the way I take care of it. When an item is made by hand, it has an inherent sentimental value passed down from the maker to the purchaser. The highest quality pieces I have purchased are the most important to me because I know that the labor that goes into each detail is priceless.

S: What are some tragic trends that you feel should be done away with?
J: T-shirts with 55 graphics, studs, and rivets isn't tough, tough guys. Keep it simple. Also, wearing multiple neon colors is for road construction, so you don't get hit by a car--which is ironic for those who find their outfit looking like Jackson Pollock painted them with glow sticks. Classic isn't boring, it's timeless for a reason.

S: Amazing! Whats your advice to a woman who wants to wear a bow tie, how should it be done?
J: With confidence. A woman in a bow tie is a very powerful look. My favorite is with the bow worn off to one side, a strapless or off-the-shoulder top, and hair pulled around to the other shoulder to really show it off. No matter what you do, ladies, just own it.

S: What generated you fascination with neck wear? Who are your style icons?
J: When I was getting into fashion, I found that like a lot of art and design, the power was in the details. In fashion, the details are accessories. There aren't as many accessories out there for men as there are for women, and that is a problem. One place where men are likely to sport an accessory is around the neck and that is where my ideas come into the picture. I began designing solely for myself. I wanted a leather bow tie so I asked my girlfriend at the time to teach me how to sew. Soon after, my friends complimented the handcrafted bows I wore around town and began requesting to buy them. I am slowly branching out into other menswear accessories and hope to one day have a full menswear line. As for style icons, I'm trying to not be too cliché when I say I think the Freedom From Doubt man is James Dean meets Frank Sinatra. You can have an attitude about your classiness--party like a rock star, dress like a gentleman.

S: Who are some of your favorite designers to wear?
J: Some of my favorites include John Varvatos (one of my first inspirations in becoming a designer), Karl Lagerfeld, Ralph Lauren, Tom Ford, Band of Outsiders, and Siki Im (who I've assisted in production of his NY Fashion Week shows in 2010 and 2011). They are all different, but they all leave something special and meaningful in the design of their garments that I have learned from.

Some pieces are made from molds that are over 20 years old, as well as new items that always seem to appear. C'est Mag is a family business, with loyal customers and devoted followers. A piece from here will solicit a lot of "Where did you get that?" and impressed faces. In a fashion climate that favors looking like an effortless "BAD-ASS", the men in the Albrizio family could probably give a lesson. Safari (2008), by: Catherine Chalmers
Photographer Catherine Chalmers (who may be best known in biology circles for her portraits of genetically modified mice) goes beyond brutal accuracy in her animal photography. In Safari, the artist straddles the border between the real and the fanciful. This wordless, hallucinatory nature documentary is not precisely natural, nor exactly a documentary. The video presents a ravishing experience of natural color by following the travails of some New York cockroaches, a species no longer found in the wild, after their release into an elaborate rain forest constructed in her studio.

Heavy Canon/Invasion of the Thunderbolt Pagoda (1968), by: Ira Cohen
Ira Cohen’s counterculture classic, The Invasion of the Thurderbolt Pagoda, showcases the music of Angus MacLise (who was the original drummer of the rock group The Velvet Underground) and the Universal Mutant Repertory Company.“Heavy Canon” (1968/2011), was directed and conceived by Cohen, edited by his assistant Will Cameron, and scored with previously unreleased tapes from the Angus MacLise archive.

The Confession (1997), by: Steve Davis
Steve Davis is a documentary portrait and landscape photographer. With his photo project Captured Youth Davis turns his lens on juvenile offenders and institutions within Washington State. To quote the intro to his book of the same title; “What are officially referred to as schools are, in fact, youth correctional facilities – jails for juniors. It’s a world kept secret from the general public, but there are no secrets inside. Everyone is watched.”

Today (2009), by: Jonathan Harris
Artist Jonathan Harris, creator of works like We Feel Fine, Sputnik Observatory and The Whale Hunt, embarked on a year-long project when he turned 30, the results of which you see here. He has won three Webby Awards and was honored as “Young Global Leader” by the World Economic Forum. His work has received coverage by CNN and BBC and has been exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

Nuntitled (2011), by: Peter Maloney
Australian artist Peter Maloney’s video Nuntitled uses painted and collaged newspaper headlines to evoke an atmosphere of incongruous mystery. The Dada-esque connections created by a seemingly unrelated series of phrases, is further heightened by the use of a soundtrack provided by David Wojnarowicz and Doug Bressler.

Harvey’s Birthday (2008), by: Ashleigh Nankivell
Short and sweet, dorky, brutal, and FUN, Harvey’s Birthday is a hilarious mash-up of genres wherein Nankivell (a veteran of remix video) combines a 1960’s vintage Folgers coffee commercial with a surrealist take on a puppet’s birthday. Ashleigh makes a second appearance at A.T.A. in this program, following up the 2010 screening of her masterpiece Helping Johnny Remember.

NOPRAH (2011), by: Tara Sinn
Artist-filmmaker-designer Tara Sinn is a native of San Jose California and currently lives and works in New York City. Sinn, who has exhibited her art internationally, is a self-proclaimed lover of “cats, the internet, and poking smot” who creates multimedia work with a humorous and ironic twist. In “ “ -a work originally imagined as a video for a San Franciscan rock group- she depicts the tragicomic impact of media mogul Oprah Winfrey’s dominion over her subjects.

Secret Historian The Life and Times of Samuel Steward (2011), by: Justin Spring
This short teaser video offers a look into the world of university professor, pulp-fiction author, tattoo artist, and sexual renegade Sam Steward. An intimate friend of Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas, and Thornton Wilder, Steward maintained a secret sex life from childhood on, and over the course of decades bedded Rock Hudson, Rudolph Valentino, Lord Alfred Douglas and in addition to an almost countless array of partners, mostly from the lower classes… and, documented the majority of these experiences in brilliantly vivid (and often very funny) detail.

In the Dark We All Can Be Free: The Life and Photography of Alvin Baltrop (Unfinished – date of completion T.B.A.), by: Randal Wilcox
Al Baltrop was born in the Bronx in 1948 and passed away in 2004. From 1975 to 1986 he photographed the scene on the crumbling piers on the west side of Manhattan. Photographing obsessively, he created an incredible archive of thousands of photographs that show a captivating mélange of intimacy, decay, violence, creativity and anarchy. Baltrop’s work was the subject (and cover) of ArtForum’s Feb. 2008 issue; and has been exhibited in numerous gallery and museum shows as well as being the subject of several in-depth essays.

SAVAGE PROGRESS is more than a Tumblr, its a collage, its hypnosis. Coming across SAVAGE PROGRESS was like finding a time portal. Cara France lives in the UK, graduated from university and makes art films. One scroll on her page and you can tell she is an artist. She graciously agreed to do an interview. Here is how it went:

SARAH: I found your Tumblr and was really amazed by both its movement and its images, as you scroll down its like watching a film. Each image brings something new but also references those before it. What is your thought process when composing SAVAGE PROGRESS. What do you look for in an image?

CARA: That’s such a tough question, it seems like quite a natural process, I just go for images that make me feel like, Woah! What the Hell! Images that you want to keep looking at and going back to. I’ve been amazed by some of the things I’ve found on here to reblog, some images, I just have to know where they are from and it's often lead me to watch movies or get into artists that I never would have heard of otherwise. The process itself is quite OCD, as sometimes I put a load of images up and if they don’t ‘feel’ right, I will just delete them all. Colour is really important to me also, and I noticed recently my tumblr is becoming increasingly lilac and lurid green.

S: So you live in the UK and you make films, What are your favorite films? Directors? Are there any artists that specifically inspire you?

C: There really are too many to list! A friend recently asked me for film recommendations and I ended up giving him and enormous list in chronological order. If I was forced to name favourite films Altered States, From Beyond, Society, Tetsou:Ironman, and Videodrome, would all be up there. Actually all early Cronenberg is amazing, and a french film called Possession from 1981 that I can’t believe I only saw this year that is one of the darkest most visceral films I’ve ever seen. When I was at uni I was really into Expanded Cinema, and experimental films from the 1960’s, those kinds of films that open your third eye like Tony Conrad's ‘Flicker’ and also Soviet Sci-Fi animation, post apocalyptic stuff that is bleak and brutal. But recently I’ve just been watching crappy cyberpunk and trashy cyborg movies like Death Machine, Hardware, Nemesis and the Trancers series, movies about virtual reality, cops from the future and getting sucked into the TV - i love crap like that, especially when it has proper old special FX and bad CGI. Art-wise at the moment I am totally into french comic book artists Philippe Druillet and Jean Giraud Moebius, and surrealists Zdzisław Beksiński and Hans Bellmer, their work always gives me goosebumps, they make those kind of eerie images that stay with you.

S: There is a lot of imagery that references sci-fi or mysticism. Also a lot of nostalgic images. Are you influenced by films or shows you saw as a child?

C: Oh yes, I think everyone is massively influenced by stuff they see when they are a kid. Kids toys and TV in the 80’s and 90’s is enough to warp anyone for life! Things like Mysterious Cities of Gold, Jayce And The Wheeled Warriors, Knightmare, Round The Twist. Also hiring out movies from the video-store on school holidays, I used to watch Flight Of The Navigator on a loop, that part when the kids head is full of star charts still makes me feel weird now. When I was 11 we got cable TV, so 90’s Nickelodeon shows, and MTV Oddities have definitely had a bearing on the stuff I am into now.

S: If you could have dinner with anyone, alive or dead, fictional or real...Who would it be?

C: No question, Jack Deth. We could chat about sub-humanoids in a sleazy diner.

S: Why did you start working on this tumblr?

C: I always collected images, and before tumblr I used to use flickr for similar stuff. I use it as an online scrapbook, a reminder of all the things I’ve been looking at or movies I’ve been watching, its like a visual mind map so everyone can take a look inside my brain, and wander about in there.

S: Who are your fashion icons?

C: Clarissa Darling, Lydia Lunch, Jennifer Herrema, Liz Bougatsos, Kate Bush

FASHION FRIENDS: Lyz Olko of Obesity and Speed

Known for iconic t-shirts and a nihilist-chic aesthetic that directly mirrors downtown New York’s perennial infatuation with paradise lost, Obesity and Speed have perfected a style that eschews luxury for uncompromising independence. Creating men’s and women’s collections, partners Lyz Olko and Josh Conner ransack punk America to create looks that highlight a degenerate take on elegance.The label was started in 2003, when the two friends met at then fledgling avant garde lower east side boutique Seven New York. There they discovered their shared interests in punk music, a dark fashion aesthetic and horror movies. These interests led them to begin collaborating in various mediums, zines, collages, mixtapes, photo shoots, jewelry, and so on….Obesity and Speed began with just one hand sewn lace appliquéd skull sweatshirt and really took off from there. We were privileged to have conversation with Lyz about the brand and about her personal style...

Sarah: Obesity and Speed has become a staple for a lot of people...your clothes are really relevant to what people want to wear right now. How do you tap into that?
Lyz: It's great to hear that actually. We try and do something different in terms of color, new fabrics, and graphic prints each season and evolving over the years, while still staying true to the brand identity. I think what we are all about in terms of our message and aesthetic translates through various trend phases and whatnot. We have a few style staples in the collection that carry through each season, like our tie back tank top, oversize drape neck top, and denim, that continue to do well.

S: You've done some collaborations, a line for Urban Outfitters and a pop-up shop for Earnest Sewn. Tell us about it.
L: We do a line for urban outfitters called "nothing sacred." It consists mostly of graphic knit bodies for women, and some men's items. A few years ago we did a pop-up shop for Earnest Sewn , in which we decorated the back room gallery space to look like a angry teenager's room with posters, props, photos and things and did a limited edition denim collaboration with Earnest. We also made a zine for the collaboration. We have also worked with Nike, Tory Burch, Oak, Nylon and are currently working on another secret project.....

S: In terms of your personal style, what are some essentials for everyday?
L: Josh and I are always wearing some sort of fucked up denim short, leather or army jacket, crusty tee, for me a black boot, josh wears converse. I also wear a lot of Pamela Love jewelry.

S: You've featured people like Isabelle McNally, Sky Ferreira, and Greg K on your site modeling O&S wares. Who is the O&S woman/man? Do you have someone or (an idea of someone) in mind when you design?
L: Someone who has great personal style follows their heart.

S: If you could wipe out one current trend that you find tragic, what would it be?
L: Ummm, hmmmmmmm.....I don't know just because I don't like something doesn't mean it's tragic. It's just my personal taste.

S: VERY democratic! Who is your style soul mate?
L: Josh.

S: Has your style evolved a lot over the years? Is there anything you used to wear all the time that now you regret?
L: My style has evolved over the years, definitely becoming more grown up. I don't know that there is anything I specifically regret, just items I don't wear now, because I'm not a 15 year old crust punk anymore.

The Artists in the Marketplace (AIM) program at the Bronx Musuem is designed to offer guidance to emerging artists unfamiliar with the professional practices of the art world. The first ever AIM Biennial showcases sculptures, works on paper, video installations, photographs, and more from on-the-come-up artists who all currently live in the New York area. With over 72 participants, this show offers a glimpse of where the art world is headed. The show is invigorating and diverse. Shown at two locations, Wave Hill and The Bronx Musuem, the show is well worth the trip on a lovely summer day. Featured artists include Heidi Lau (shown above), Brian Scott Campell, and Jessica Stoller.
